For my first reading I chose to evaluate a digital artists and sculptor Nils Hansen. He learned the ropes of stone carving in his home city Dusseldorf. With time and dedication he went on to refine his art in Carrara, Italy - the hub for the marble artistry. Adding to his classical training, he also attended the Babelsberg Film School in Berlin to study Digital Film Design with a major in 3D modeling. This unique set of abilities serves the foundation of his career as an artist. He is currently living in Berlin, Germany, where he actively works on his practice producing small abstract stone and bronze carvings.
Hansen's work is a beautiful depiction of sculpting in today's world of over stimulation. He is great at drawing out the physical elements from virtual reality. He experiments with fusing traditional material like marble and bronze. He starts with sketches in virtual programs using a variety of meshes and blockchains where he then uses that as the base for producing the work in a physical environment. I see Hansens work addressing themes of transformation, fragmentation, and the influence of technology as a base for art production. Besides his career as a fine artist, Hansen also applies his expertise in the Mercedes-Benz research and development department to think about future products and systems!
