Artist Statement

For my first assignment I chose to interrogate the concepts of power, freedom, and the visual narrative of government authority. Using glitch art as my primary medium, I manipulate images of US government monuments, buildings, and symbols of freedom to distort  their familiar meanings. I used programs like Audacity and Photoshop to exploit the digital flaws and errors to visually convey the corruption that lurks beneath the surface of our institutional powers.

This project stems from my belief that trust in the government is rapidly deteriorating. The distortion of these revered symbols reflects to me a growing disillusionment with systems that were built to protect and serve but now appear fractured and self-serving. The process of glitching was extremely fun to create and mirrors my idea of the breakdown of trust that suggests a fragile reality that no longer feels reliable and safe.

The 7 GIFs I’ve created pulse with strong emotions and tensions. These feelings I aim to evoke are manipulated images of the unrelenting nature of corruption. The movement within each piece speaks to an uncertain future, one where the erosion of transparency and accountability leaves us grappling with instability. The GIF format itself, (endless and looping) reinforces this sense of entrapment and decay. Through "Corruption in Motion," I aim to provoke discomfort and reflection. I invite the viewer to confront the unsettling reality of a failing trust in governance and the unknowable path that lies ahead, challenging them to consider what freedom and power truly mean in this shifting landscape and economy.
